Byblos Art Hotel Villa Amistà, Verona

Housed in the ancient Villa Amistà in Corrubbio di Negarine, in the heart of the Valpolicella, the exclusive five- star Byblos Art Hotel was inaugurated in September 2005.

The large building featuring a 15th century façade by architect Michele Sanmicheli (1489-1559) had been abandoned for some time before being carefully renovated thanks to Dino Facchini’s and his family’s passion for art. The owners of the prestigious Byblos fashion label, have made accurate renovations both in terms of the architecture and the paintings and décor. Restoration has been carried out on the central and more monumental part of the villa and also on the two towers, the small church dedicated to Saint Rocco and the farm buildings. The complex renovation project was completely designed by Alessandro Mendini and his Atelier. The extensive garden, covering an area of twenty thousand square meters, was designed by Gianfranco Paghera and offers an evocative setting, an “earthly paradise” with fountains and swimming pool, where guests can enjoy a unique atmosphere by smell, sight and touch all the year round. The relaxing “Espace Byblos” spa makes use of the latest scientific advances and offers recovery of fitness, health and wellbeing.

The hotel gourmet restaurant “Atelier”, that is also open to the public, offers creative cuisine exploiting traditional specialties as well as international dishes; Peter’s Bar is a pleasant and refined setting dedicated to the American artist Peter Halley, where clients can enjoy cocktails, aperitifs and long drinks accompanied by music and melodies. Inside, there is a large hall dominated by a Venetian chandelier and other rooms with elaborate ceiling decorations and murals. There are also two conference rooms and an evocative cellar with a 15th century vault for wine-tasting with more then 500 labels. Sixty rooms and suites, with different features and dimensions are available for the guests, including a presidential suite and some artistic suites with carefully designed furniture that are like amazing Wunderkammern. The hotel has been furnished with a combination of three different figurative styles:

1) revision and design of furniture items, fabrics and curtains, with particular care for the colour system that was borrowed from Byblos prét à porter collections, in order to create a contemporary update of the 16th-18th century iconography with inspiration from the typical paintings of Veneto region;

2) addition of several furniture items, lamps and carefully selected famous design objects, in order to create a real collection, starting form the flatware by Gio Ponti, to works of art by Eero Saarinen, F.L. Wright, Aldo Rossi, Philippe Starck, Ron Arad, Gaetano Pesce, Anna Gili, Patricia Urquiola, Harrison & Gil, Marcel Wanders, Ettore Sottsass, Luca Sacchetti. Like in a museum, every object is completed by a precise caption;

3) finally, not only halls and common rooms, but also guests rooms are furnished with a collection of contemporary art, which is the result of the owners love for art, and includes works by Anish Kapoor, Vanessa Beecroft, Giulio Paolini, Peter Halley, Cindy Sherman, Mimmo Rotella, Sol Lewitt, Beatriz Millar, Begona Montalbán, David Tremlett, Jean Michel Othoniel, Sandro Chia, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Richard Stipl, Takashi Murakami, Fulvia Mendini, Valerio Adami, Robert Indiana, Luigi Ontani, Sissi, Marc Quinn, Damien Hirst, Jim Dine, Piero Manzoni, Patricia Piccinini, Jelena Vasiljev, Herbert Hamak, Tony Cragg, Haubiz+Zoche, De Paris and other artists in progress.

A precise combination of these different visual elements results into a fascinating set design, an accurate scenic and museum-like setting to enable an outstanding hospitality where the glamorous prét à porter fashion label Byblos is melted into a synergy with the splendour of an ancient past and a modern spirit. The aim was to bring this magnificent summer villa back to its original splendour and take the hotel guests into a neo-baroque rural experience among past, present and future. Furthermore, some of the most impressive furniture items and objects (such as chairs, pillows, fabrics, silverware, candelabra, plates, cups and others) have been exclusive designed for the hotel by the well-known architect and designer Alessandro Mendiniand, belonging to the BYBLOS CASA collection, can also be purchased by the guests. The collection represents streams such as ethnic style, revival or international design lines and combines contemporary technological materials. Byblos Casa aims for a high-level clientele, although it offers also more accessible, less expensive products.

In 2006 the hotel was recognized by Condè Nast Traveller as one of the “Hot Spas Top New 130 Hotels 2006” and “Hot Hotel Top New 130 Hotel 2006”. In the same year Byblos Art Hotel was awarded with two prizes from the prestigious show “Prix Villégiature” in Paris: “Best Hotel Architecture in Europe” and “Best Graphic Identity of Hotel in Europe”. The strong identity of this aristocratic residence was restored to its ancient magnificence and has become a charming luxury hotel with a contemporary atmosphere, where glamour prints and an innovative use of colour and patchwork, according to peculiar features of Byblos fashion collections, are combined with works by world famous artists. In the Autumn of 2009 the hotel was granted the prize “Premio Villa Veneta 2009” for its remarkable conversion into a tourism and culture place that also offers an exhibition of contemporary art. Moreover, since 2007 the hotel is a member of the eminent American association “The Leading Small Hotels of the World”.
